HOUSE OF SECRETS "Taste of Dark Fire!"

Rarely do comics from two different genres crossover...

...but this terror tale from DC's House of Secrets #89 (1970-71) actually leads-in to...a romance comic!

Read it and we'll explain at the end...

This story by writer Gerry Conway and artist Don Heck appears to be the pilot/intro to an ongoing series, but no other tales about the disparate duo ever appeared!

But, that wasn't the end of their Battle Against Satanic Evil!

The interfaith avengers next appear in DC's Sinister House of Secret Love #2 (1971-72), where they save the rabbi's niece from being sacrificed in a demonic wedding ceremony!

It wouldn't be until years later that the Pugnacious Priest and Rambunctious Rabbi would appear once more, this time as the cover-featured heroes in a book-length story in DC's House of Secrets #150 (1978) which teamed them with the Phantom Stranger and Dr 13 to battle a mystical menace in both the past and the present!

Sadly, they haven't been seen in new stories on this plane of existence since...

CoronaVirus Comics CHAMBER OF DARKNESS "Day of the Red Death!"

Here's another "adaptation" of Edgar Allan Poe's classic tale of disease...

...which, for a change, freely admits the source material!

In fact, out of the mouth of Stan (the Man) Lee himself...

A rich, uncaring guy who has the power to destroy the entire world and wouldn't hesitate to allow a plague to do so...as long as he was safe!

Now who does that remind us of?

Writer Roy Thomas had been a teacher before turning to writing/editing comics, and he loved utilizing classic literature in his work!

Don Heck, whose Marvel work was usually inked by others, apparently relished the opportunity to do both penciling and inking, as he had done in his 1950s horror and war comics work!

In addition, John Romita Sr turned in a wonderfully-rendered cover which was somewhat obscured by the black tints used to create "mood".

...so here's a slew of them, along with their ringleader, the debonair Teller (no relation to Penn's silent partner)!

How many horror hosts narrate their own origin story?

While the writer for this never-reprinted scare-story from Comic Media's Horrific #8 (1953) is unknown, the art is by the extremely-underrated Don Heck, who did some of his best work for Comic Media's twin terror-titles Horrific and Weird Terror.
